A Thomas Webb and Sons silver-mounted three-layer cameo glass decanter, dated 1887
Of 'Shaft and Globe' shape with a small twig loop handle, overlaid with layers of white and red on a bright yellow ground, delicately carved with trailing vine issuing trumpet flowers and tendrils, a chevron border to the footring, the hinged silver cover finely chased with further flowering clematis and inscribed 'Linnie A McCoon/ June 1. 1887' and connected by a chain, 23.2cm high, American mounts by Gorham, Providence, Rhode Island, marked STERLING

This decanter was presented to Caroline (Linnie) Auguste McCoon on the occasion of her marriage to Frederick W Gunther in New York on 1 June 1887. They lived for a time at 144 West 72nd Street. Another similar decanter is illustrated by Ray and Lee Grover (1980), p.372, no.C14.
