Of rectangular form with gilt metal mounts, the interior of the cover printed in black with a profile portrait of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, engraved by Ravenet, the exterior with 'La Promenade', engraved by Robert Hancock, the sides and base with rococo panels, 5.6cm wide
Footnotes:
Provenance
Bunny and Paul Davies Collection

A very similar box is illustrated by Cyril Cook, The Life and Work of Robert Hancock (1948), item 87. Another example of the rare Duke of Cumberland print is illustrated by Therle and Bernard Hughes, English Painted Enamels (1951), p.18, fig.2 and another in the Schreiber Collection by Egan Mew, Battersea Enamels (1926), fig.3. The companion print depicts Frederick, Prince of Wales.
Condition
The cover is in good condition with just a fine diagonal crack running across from the mount below the figures to a point close to the extended left hand of the male figure. There is also a short and very fine crack close to the mount on the bottom right hand corner of the cover. There are a few minute surface scratches visible using an eye glass. The interior of the cover has a fine crack running down from the mount above the head of the King to a point just above his right eyebrow. Associated with this is a minute slither chip just inside the mount. There is a tiny area of retouching to an area inside the mount on the right which is level with his cravat. There are a few fine and typical cracks within the interior of the base. On the exterior there are some small areas of restoration suggesting that small chips have been repaired. This has been well done and the areas are only noticeable with the use of a UV light. These areas are found on all four corners of the base just below the mount and on one corner of the foot of the base. There are also to small areas of restoration along the edges of the foot. The restoration has been very well done.
