Description
A Staffordshire pearlware figure group of 'The Dandies', circa 1825-30
The fashionable couple standing arm-in-arm, his pale mauve 'frac' or coat revealing a cravat and high collar at the neck, her blue coat worn over a patterned dress, the hemline daringly above her ankles, her wide-brimmed hat with plumes of colourful feathers, before flowering bocage on a rectangular base washed in yellow and edged with red lines, 21cm high
Footnotes:
The turquoise bocage is associated with Sherratt-type figures. The gentleman carries a reticule or small bag similar to his partner's, as pockets would have compromised the cut of his dapper trousers. For an extensive discussion on 'The Dandies' and so-called 'Dandizettes' in Staffordshire pottery see Myrna Schkolne, People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures (2006), pp.54-61.
