Known for: Abstract and naturalist landscape painting-churches, war artist
Biography: A versatile painter depicting churches, other architectural structures, and fauve-like abstract landscapes, John Piper was also a theatre set designer, and writer. With his wife, painter Myfanwy Piper, he founded Axis, a contemporary art journal. Piper lived much of his adult life at Fawley Bottom near Henley-on-Thames, but had an active career beyond his residence. He did set designs in London for the Royal Opera House's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream by Benjamin Britten, and for operas by Alun Hoddinott. He designed stained-glass windows for many churches including Coventry Cathedral, and tapestries for Chicester and Hereford Cathedrals. John Piper was born and raised at Epsom, a village eighteen miles southwest of London on the chalk hills or "downs' of Epsom. He was educated at Epsom College, Richmond School of Art, and Royal College of Art in London. His early painting was abstract, increasingly his fascination with real architectural features turned him to Realism or Naturalism. Piper's love for the countryside, which developed when he was growing up in rural England had permanent influence on his interest in local churches, general architecture, and landscape. As a young man, he wanted to go to art school, but his father insisted on his becoming a solicitor like himself. However, the death of his father soon after they agreed Piper would try law for three years, and his failure of the law exams, opened the door for his life as an artist. During World War II, Piper was appointed an official war artist from 1940 to 1942, and some of his work resulted in Shell Guides, post-war guidebooks with maps of the counties of Britain for the new era of car driving tourists. Retrospective exhibitions of his etchings and abstract paintings have been held at the Tate Modern, and of his more realist work at the Tate Britain and the Imperial War Museum.
