Description
A rare and unusual platter attributed to the migrant Italian potters of the Triana-Sevilla pottery center in Spain during the first half of the 17th Century. Painted with impasto on the rim and central depiction of a striding man with the severed head of a woman in hand, identified as the personification of America. Inspired by an engraving by Philippe Galle, likely once part of a set of dishes representing the Four Continents. Provenance: American Ceramic Circle Journal, Vol. X, article "A Spanish Puzzle" (31-34). Dimensions: H 2" x Dia. 16" Condition: One crack extending about 10" from rim to center, with a few chips along seam. Antique patina including chips, pitting and rubbing to decoration.
