AFTER JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785-1851) BY ROBERT HAVELL (1793-1878) ENGRAVING WITH ETCHING, AQUATINT AND HAND-COLORING ON J WHATMAN TURKEY MILL PAPER WITH WATERMARK 1829 H 25.25" W 38" WINTER HAWK (PLATE 71), FROM BIRDS OF AMERICA From the Robert Havell Edition. Circus hyemalis, Variant 1, on J Whatman Turkey Mill 1829 watermark in the upper right quadrant. Sheet Size: H 25 Frame measures H 35" x L 48". Provenance: Property of Potter Palmer III , by descent to Ruth Palmer (1945-1981), by descent to Gladys Kiniery (1981-1988), by descent to Helen Becker of Winfield, Illinois, purchased by Douglas Kenyon, Inc., Chicago, IL (1988, paper label affixed verso). Provenance: a Saugatuck, Michigan estate.
Condition
Trimmed just inside the platemark, with pale light staining, soft handling creases, short repaired tear in the upper right corner (extending in from the sheet edge .75"), two short tears along the extreme right sheet edge, a few specks of pale foxing, otherwise no visible abrasions, colors vibrant.
