Canadian. 1870s. Lithographed paper. Marked, "Engraved by D.L. Glover" and "Painted by Ferdinand Richardt - The Bridge from Daguerreotype" lower right edge. Frame marked, "Grand Trunk Railway System". This important, early lithograph depicts Great Western Railway's Great International Railway Suspension Bridge. Built by John A. Roebling; an American civil engineer who also built the Brooklyn Bridge over the Hudson River in New York. The suspension bridge connected Canada to the United States and was the world's first railway suspension bridge. Work on the bridge began in 1852 and was completed in 1855. The bridge remained in service until it was replaced by a single arch bridge in 1897. Minor vertical airburn stains. Exhibits three vertical tears, the largest within the right quarter, extending downward from the upper edge. From the Joe Byway Collection. SIght 24.75 x 33.5"
