A baleen bone and mother-of-pearl inlaid sailor's stay busk, A baleen bone and mother-of-pearl inlaid sailor's stay busk, late 18th/early 19th century, American, initialled ‘M’ and the reverse ‘E’ in a heart pierced by arrows, the front comprehensively incised with full-length decoration including the facade of a house, ‘NAN’ (Nantucket), a carved-out heart with red pigment and two five-point stars, all within a chip-carved border, the reverse inscribed ‘SHIP MYSTIC’ in a banner, 3cm wide 27cm long Provenance: The Gordon Gridley Collection, London. Condition Report: Very slight warp.
