An American Coin Silver Flagon, Mark of Nicholas J. Bogert
circa 1820, marked "N. J. Bogert" in rectangular punch to underside, elegant tall cylindrical form with slight taper, bold stepped base, S-scroll handle with heart shape terminal, the hinged cover with bud finial.

Nicholas James Bogert was born in New York City on July 24, 1776. He apprenticed with William Garret Forbes beginning around 1789. By 1801 Bogert was working as a silversmith in the city. In 1803, he had moved to Montgomery, New York to continue his business until his death in 1843.
Examples of Bogert's silver are in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, and the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
