Description
China, Late Qing to Republican Period, late 19th to early 20th century
Dimensions: 8.8" (22.5 cm) H
Of baluster form with a wide trumpet mouth and pronounced footring, the rim with key fret and hanging garlands and neck with high stylized Qing lappets with a ruyi collar at the shoulder. A continuous landscape of mountains and rivers surrounds the body – all decoration in iron black fired grisaille painted directly on the unglazed biscuit fired body – sutaimocai (biscuit fired grisaille).
Only about a dozen examples of this white bodied biscuit fired grisaille have been published, and all are conservatively dated to the late Qing to early Republican period, often having spurious Qianlong impressed marks and usually small desk or scholar’s items. Compare with a set of 10 desk items in this biscuit fired grisaille in Sotheby’s New York sale, 20MAR2019, Lot 775 – each signed biyunshanfang and dated late 19th to early 20th century.
