Description
A Maori Pendant or Ring (poira kaka) New Zealand, c. 1800s Carved from translucent green jade with a satiny soft hand feel. Teardrop shape with large hole at center and pierced at top for suspension, sides and bottom with serrated ridge. Such jade rings started out as leg tethers for pet parrots ("kaka"). Later they were heirlooms worn as pendants or earrings. In excellent condition; a gold ring through the top hole. Provenance: A Private Collection, New York, NY, acquired in 1993 Wayne Heathcote, Paris Height: 3 inches
