Abraham Lincoln Printer's Die Progress Proof Engraving Attrbuted to Charles Schlecht of ABN and BEP Frame
Abraham Lincoln Trial Progress Proof attributed to engraver Charles Schlecht, original Printer's Proof Engraving on light Card, Choice Crisp Near Mint.
c. 1864 Civil War to Assassination Era, Hand-Engraved Plate Printed Proof of PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN, measuring 4.25" x 3.25" and deeply impressed on a 6.5" x 5" Card, Crisp Near Mint. Unsigned as typical, most certainly done by the famed engraver CHARLES SCHLECHT (1843-1932), who was born in Germany but came to New York at an early age where he apprenticed at the American Bank Note Company. He often did freelance work but his primary career was at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It is not known exactly when this engraving was made, and for what purpose, but it was found with other Lincoln images in his estate. A fine Proof Engraving trial strike of the President that belongs in any Lincoln related collection.
