Known as one of the most influential caricaturists in history, Hirschfeld went on to capture countless celebrities and Broadway stars with little more than his expressive black lines; a career with the NY Times spanning 75 years. Here Hirschfeld has captured perfectly the immensely popular duo of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce playing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson who starred in 14 films from 1939 to 1946 and involving two studios. For fans of the series, Hirschfeld created a perfect tribute to this duo in a two color hand pulled lithograph with the shadow of the pair on the wall a fine flourish.
