Holmes, Oliver Wendell Autograph Letter Signed 4pp. to a Woman Abroad and Containing Revealing and Politically Charged Comments (1841-1935) Lengthy autograph letter signed (actually initialed OWH) on Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court 10 x 8" to a Hibernia a woman abroad on May 10th 1898. According to sources Holmes had a large number of close male friends he frequently corresponded to in England and apparently even more so to women. But there are interesting passages here "Your letter gave me deep joy--I leave you to remember why". Another "I can't write freely while you are away from home and I don't wish to edify the clerks of the dead letter office." Clearly being humorous but in the letter he addresses his fears of a global conflagration and the hope the UK and US will bring the countries closer. "….If there is to be a world's row then I hope with all my heart that we should back you and to us--to bring out the English speaking race on top" . A transcription of this letter conveys as Holmes' handwriting is difficult at times to parse. In excellent condition.
