Item Details
Description
Archaic and early Kapadokian Kilim
370 x 130 cm (12' 2" x 4' 3")
Turkey, dated 1168 (1755)
Condition: good according to age, partially incomplete all around, missing parts backed with fabric, abrasions and signs of use, sewn on fabric
Warp: wool, weft: wool and cotton

A very enigmatic and spiritual, early Anatolian kilim from Cappadocia. Extremely rare feature here, is a date inscription in the lower third of its field. The only another example of dated "large" kilim I know, was exhibited in Aachen and published by "Kelim-Connection" in 2002, plate 29. Though from different weaving regions, both share the same main design element of largely scaled hooked medallions. I believe that the unusually minimal color range in this kilim, is intentional. It probably served the weaver during her extensive usage of "negative field" design technique, to broaden the iconography and amplify the meaning of it to her community!
