Francois Boucher (Paris, 1703 - 1770) Circle, Group of Cupids with DovesThis splendid painting, the work of a French painter from the school of Francois Boucher, depicts a painting of the Rococo period; the most delicate, light and at the same time elegant of styles, able to interpret the peculiarities of the French society of the Ancien Régime in painting. The composition is taken from a Boucher canvas, made around 1730 and now kept at the Academy of Fine Arts, in Honolulu. In a bucolic landscape, near a source of water, a joyful group of four cupids is seen playing with two doves, one of which flies playfully tied by a white ribbon. A feeling of gracefulness pervades the scene, emphasized by the graceful poses of the little angels and by the masterful use of the palette, where the colors are clear, bright and enhance the beautiful play of chiaroscuro. Francois Boucher and his workshop dedicated much of their activity to this type of subject, symbol par excellence of the frivolous pleasures of life to which the aristocratic class yearned, thanks to the great fame of the master and the copious requests from collectors. Our work, chronologically located in the second half of the eighteenth century, can therefore be attributed to a pupil, or a study assistant of the French painter. Oil on canvas, 85 x 113 cm
