Description
The LaLeggera chair is, as its name suggests, an unusually light stackable chair, composed of a wooden frame to which two thin layers of veneer are applied, and whose cavities are filled with polyurethane resin. The chair exploits the potential of veneer, a material (usually wood) used to cover another, usually less noble, underlying material. The seat can indeed be interpreted as a reinterpretation of the modernist motto "fidelity to materials".The LaLeggera chair suggests comfort by combining the old and the new, without forcing the user to consciously notice it.Italian architect and designer Riccardo Blumer has focused his career on exploring the qualities of lightness, to an idea of lightness for its own sake, which in his words "has a lot to express".The LaLeggera chair owes a great deal to its elegant predecessor, Gio Ponti's lightweight Superleggera of 1957.The chair is named in its honour, reintroducing the term "light" in the sense of light, agile and quick, as a kind of homage to its progenitor. While the Superleggera weighs just 1750 grams, the LaLeggera chair is a little heavier, but still a feather. It won a Compasso d'Oro award in 1998, much to the surprise of Alias who, despite their profound dedication to the project, had not anticipated the number of requests that would have required a dedicated production facility. In 2009 the project became part of the permanent collection of MoMA in New York.
