**First Time At Auction**
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden head depicting a stylized anthropomorphic visage with deep eye cavities, drilled mouth with rounded lower lip, a triangular nose, and low relief ears to the sides. The neck extends into a lengthy post with a groove encircling the center. Ancestors played a vital role in the daily lives of Indonesians and when an individual passed away, a full wooden figure or head, like this example, was created to represent the deceased and protect their tomb. Size: 14.5" L x 5" W (36.8 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Drimmer collection, Florida, USA, before 1965

Old losses to head and nose as shown. Stable pressure fissures and losses to base. Gouges and cavities on the head. Great patina throughout.
