Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Late Nazca, Phase 6, ca. 550 to 750 CE. A delightful pottery vessel in the form of a stylized portrait head comprised of several horizontal bands of phytomorphic and zoomorphic designs, all carefully hand-painted in tones of maroon, golden rod, sky blue, gray, beige, and black. In contrast to his decoration, the visage itself is quite minimalist showing a pair of amygdaloid eyes, a raised nose, a pointed chin, and a straight mouth engulfed by the liberal remains of a beard and moustache, all framed by a short coiffure and forehead ornament. A tiered and flared headdress crowns the head, opening to the interior of the vessel at the top to double as the rim, while 3 horizontal registers of abstract motifs adorn the face and headdress. Size: 2.9" Diameter x 4" H (7.4 cm x 10.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
