Description
Two 18th C. hand colored engravings, botanical studies of flowering plants and insects. Signed in plate “P. Sluyter Sculp,” Pieter Sluyter, 18th C. Dutch engraver. After original paintings by Maria Sibylla Merian, an early female scientific illustrator who travelled to Suriname in 1699 and self-published her work with the help of Sluyter and two other engravers. Plate 14.5” x 10.5”, Overall 27” x 21”.
Condition
Not examined out of frame, some mat burn visible, a few faint spots.
