Item Details
Description
English Porcelain Figure of a Polish Nobleman
Circa 1752, unmarked, indistinct inscription to the underside, possibly Longton Hall
Of 'Snowman' type, loosely based on the Meissen model by Peter Reinicke, the mustached figure modeled standing, one hand on hip, the other outstretched above a sabre, wearing a fur-lined green hat, his long Ottoman style white coat edged in gilt and painted in iron-red with crescents, peacock-eye's, crow's feet and star-like patterns, belted at the waist with a turquoise sash, and revealing a yellow tunic and green trousers, above yellow boots with red heels, the distinctive canted square base applied with two large flat yellow centered blue flowers growing from a curved stem with leaves and painted with a pink rose spray.
Height 5 3/4 inches (14.6cm).

Provenance:
Mr. & Mrs. James Stewart, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Sotheby's, London, 13 November 1973, lot 29.

Reference Errol & Henrietta Manners exhibition catalogue, 'Roy Hogarth Collection of Rare English Figures', 27 February 2018, p. 20 for a similarly inspired London-decorated example. Here noting the traditional costume for Polish noblemen of the period included a preference for a split sleeve of this design. For a Meissen example, circa 1750, see Yvonne Adams, Meissen Figures, 2004, p. 59, no. 140.

Based on a Meissen model by J.J. Kändler of circa 1745 in turn after an engraving by M. de Ferriol, published, Recueil de cent estampes représentant differentes nations du Levants, Paris, 1714. See Bernard Watney, E.C.C. Transactions, Vol. 8, Part, 2, pl. 181(b). For an example of the related Meissen model, see Bonham's, London, 17 June 2015, lot 146. Also see Sarah Andres-Acevedo et. al., The Prince Amyn Aga Khan Collection of Early Meissen Porcelain, for a Meissen figure in this stance and garb, his hat doffed and in his left hand, cat. no. 9, p. 78. For a Chaffers Liverpool example 'modelled on a Longton Hall example' in turn based on the Meissen prototype, see Mary Wise & Grosvenor Antiques, no. 92150/198487.
