James Dean had grown up in his uncle’s family in peasant Fairmount. The picture was taken in February 1955, when Dennis Stock accompanied the 24-year-old film star to New York and to the place of his childhood, commissioned by the Life magazine. Before that, Dean had finished filming “East of Eden”, which was the basis for his meteoric fame and his image as an impetuous, melancholic rebel. The original negative number stamp refers to a wrong year of origin, inasmuch as Dean had a fatal accident in September 1955. Since this error can be found in all prints of this series distributed by Magnum, it is considered proof of authenticity. Die Aufnahme entstand im Februar 1955, als Dennis Stock den 24-jährigen Filmstar im Auftrag der Zeitschrift Life nach New York und an den Ort seiner Kindheit begleitete. Davor hatte Dean die Dreharbeiten für „East of Eden“ beendet, womit er seinen kometenhaften Ruhm und sein Image als ungestümer, melancholischer Rebell begründete. Der Negativnummernstempel verweist auf ein falsches Entstehungsjahr, insofern Dean bereits im September 1955 tödlich verunglückte. Da sich dieser Irrtum bei allen von Magnum vertriebenen Prints dieser Serie findet, gilt er als Authentizitätsnachweis.
