SEBASTIÃO SALGADO (*1944) | Greater Burhan Oil Field, Kuwait 1991 | Archival pigment print, printed in the 1990s, semi-matte paper, in perfect condition 18,8 x 28,2 cm Photographer’s agency copyright stamp, typographic archive stamp “Koweit” and agency copyright stamp with handwritten number “Sal. 91-007-W-00083/37” on the reverse Troops of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had set fire to the Kuwaiti oil fields in February 1991 during the Second Gulf War before retreating. Sebastião Salgado travelled to the site of the disaster and documented the ghostly inferno. For his photographs, first published in the “New York Times Magazine”, the Brazilian photographer received the Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Im Zweiten Golfkrieg hatten Truppen des irakischen Diktators Saddam Hussein im Februar 1991 vor ihrem Rückzug die kuwaitischen Ölfelder in Brand gesteckt. Sebastião Salgado reiste an den Ort der Katastrophe und dokumentierte das gespenstische Inferno. Für seine zuerst im „New York Times Magazine“ veröffentlichten Aufnahmen erhielt der brasilianische Fotograf den Leica Oskar Barnack Award.
