In the 1920s, Drtikol became internationally known for his fascinating photographic style, characterised by geometric elements, expressive-dynamic poses and dramatic light staging. As a “photographer of Art Deco”, Drtikol found an independent vocabulary of forms inspired by Futurism, Expressionism and Cubism, yet always lyrical. The present nude appeared in his photo book ‘Women in Light’, which is now highly prized, as the only example from his series with ropes (there, the caption notes “A taut rope. Sidelight. Light bulb”). As the stamps and labels on the offered vintage print prove, Drtikol showed this motif at international exhibitions in a laterally reversed variant to the published version. Since both the contemporary publication and the authentic vintage print can be traced back to the artist himself, both variants obviously corresponded to his intention. The artist’s own dating on the cardboard of the exhibition print consolidates what has so far been merely an assumption and is thus another valuable contribution to research that distinguishes this collector’s item. In den 1920er Jahren wurde Drtikol mit seinem faszinierenden fotografischen Stil, der von geometrischen Elementen, expressiv-dynamischen Posen und dramatischen Lichtinszenierungen geprägt ist, international bekannt. Als „Fotograf des Art Déco“ fand Drtikol zu einer eigenständigen, vom Futurismus, Expressionismus und Kubismus inspirierten, dennoch stets lyrischen Formensprache. Der vorliegende Akt erschien in seinem – heute teuer gehandelten – Fotobuch ‘Frauen im Licht’ als einziges Beispiel aus seiner Serie mit Seilen (dort ist in der Bildlegende vermerkt „Ein straffes Seil. Seitenlicht. Glühbirne“). Wie die Stempel und Labels am Originalkarton belegen, zeigte Drtikol dieses Motiv auf internationalen Ausstellungen, allerdings gegenüber der publizierten Variante seitenverkehrt. Da sowohl die zeitgenössische Publikation wie auch der authentische Vintageprint auf den Künstler selbst zurückgehen, entsprachen offenbar beide Varianten seiner Intention. Die eigenhändige Datierung des Künstlers am Karton des Ausstellungsprints festigt die bisher meist nur assumptive Annahme und ist damit ein weiterer wertvoller Beitrag zur Forschung, den dieses Sammlerstück auszeichnet.
