Item Details
Description
ROGER FENTON (1819–1869) | Cedars, Monmouthshire, Whales 1856 | Photogalvanograph, printed in October 1856, on original cardboard 55,4 x 37,8 cm, image in perfect condition, mount with signs of wear From the series ‘Photographic Art Treasures’ 21,6 x 17,5 cm Typographic title and credit of the photographer as well as publisher “Photo-galvano-graphic Company London” with printing date below the image, blindstamp of the Company on the lower mount The electrographic printing process invented by Paul Pretsch of Vienna in 1854 ushered in a new era in the history of photography and printing: photogravure, which made it possible to publish photographs in ink. This process replaced hand engraving because it was more accurate and cheaper. It took about six weeks to make the plate, of which only a few hundred prints could be made with the help of a printing press. The motif of the monumental cedar tree is one of the most famous landscape photographs by Roger Fenton, who is also considered a pioneer of war photography.
