This process replaced hand engraving because it was more accurate and cheaper. It took about six weeks to make the plate, of which only a few hundred prints could be made with the help of a printing press. The motif of the monumental cedar tree is one of the most famous landscape photographs by Roger Fenton, who is also considered a pioneer of war photography.
