Greek Black-Figure Amphora - Dionysian & Warrior Scenes
Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 520 BCE. A graceful neck amphora of the type B form with a clearly defined lip and neck, a dramatically curved shoulder, and high arched handles, all supported by a torus foot and painted via the black-figure technique with fugitive (added) white pigment. Side A presents a Dionysian scene with Dionysos, the god of wine and revelry, flanked by a pair of dancing maenads, both delineated in profile and facing right, and a pair of aulos-playing satyrs who are depicted opposing one another in profile. Dionysos holds a drinking horn and wears a grapevine wreath atop his head. Copious grapevines with clusters of fruit embellish the scene and confirm the Dionysian theme. Size: 10.875" in Diameter x 17.75" H (27.6 cm x 45.1 cm)

Side B presents a warrior scene. On the far right is Athena with her characteristic Corinthian helmet, large shield, and spear, and at the far left is a cloaked, helmeted figure holding a quiver on the back. The section between these two figures may depict prisoners of war, albeit with losses as shown.

In addition to the aforementioned iconography, this vessel boasts a lovely decorative program comprised of a register of stylized palmettes above each figural scene, and a band of pointed rays rising from the foot.

Ancient Athenian painters, including the painter of this vessel, took advantage of the large size of Attic vases which gave them more room to explore their techniques and present complex interactions between figures.
