Description
Louis Rhead (American, 1857-1926) Untitled (Piggy-back Ride) oil on wood, signed upper right, probably original illustration art for a book or magazine cover. Framed. Size: 25'' x 18.75'', 64 x 48 cm (board); 33'' x 26.5'', 84 x 67 cm (frame). Provenance: White Whale Antiques; Private Pennsylvania Collection. Rhead was the lead artist of the American poster renaissance in 1890-1910. He edited the magazine Art Interchange and also worked as a prominent illustrator in the Golden Age of American illustration, 1880s-1920s. A member of the Architectural League he was a lead illustrator for the Century and Scribner's magazines. He was also a talented ceramicist, and in older age became famous for inventing fishing lures and writing about and creating paintings about angling. His work rarely comes up for auction. He is represented in the Delaware Art Museum and the Brandywine River Museum.
