George Hetzel (1826-1899) Untitled (Still Life with Fruit,) c. 1880s, pastel, signed lower right. Origainal antique frame. Size: 11.25'' x 8'', 29 x 20 cm (sight); 19'' x 15.5'', 48 x 39 cm (frame). Provenance: George Witus; Collection of Dr. Christine I. Oaklander. Hetzel was founder of the Scalp Level group of artists, so named because of the rural town outside of Johnstown, PA, that Pittsburgh artists went to paint during the summer. Hetzel was known as primary a landscape painter influenced by the Hudson River School but his still lifes, usually on a table top with a melon, grapes, and peaches, are more rare and highly sought after.
