Description
Manner of Robert Winthrop Chanler (1872-1930) "Undersea Life," oil and gold leaf on Masonite, not signed. Framed. Chanler is known for his fantastical folding screens depicting exotic animals in movement, often in combat. He exhibited over a dozen screens in the 1913 Armory Show. A member of the Woodstock, NY art colony, he was known for his eccentric behavior. His home/studio in New York City was named the House of Fantasy due to the unconventional and even surreal decoration and events that transpired there. He is represented in the Whitney Museum, Metropolitan Museum, National Gallery, and the Heckscher Museum. Much of his body of work remains with his descendants or in the homes of the wealthy industrialists who commissioned his art to decorate their homes, notably Vizcaya, in Miami. Size: 17.5'' x 23.5'', 44 x 60 cm (sight); 21.5'' x 27.5'', 55 x 70 cm (frame). Provenance: Joshua Lowenfels; Private Pennsylvania Collection.
