Description
Cretaceous period, 100-93 million years BP A tooth from the large carnivorous dinosaur Carcharodontosaurus Saharicus with good edge serrations; there is some evidence of pre-fossilization consumption of enamel by bacteria or worms on one side; with display stand and a photocopy of the original French monograph plate. See Memoires de la Societe Geologique de France, volume XXXIX, memoire 88A, plate IV. 29 grams, 73 mm excluding stand. (3"). Ex Douglas Rose collection. Carcharodontosaurus was a gigantic carnivorous carcharodontosaurid dinosaur that lived around 100 to 93 million years ago, during the late Albian to early Cenomanian stages of the mid-Cretaceous Period. It was discovered to be the second largest predatory dinosaur, larger than Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus, but not as large as Spinosaurus. The Carcharodontosaurus is named after the shark genus Carcharodon (from the Greek karcharo meaning jagged or sharp), odonto meaning teeth and sauros, meaning lizard: jagged-toothed lizard or sharp-toothed lizard.
