Description
Attributed to JOAQUIN TORRES GARCIA (1874-1949) Title: Untitled (Constructivist Drawing), Medium: Pencil on Paper, Date: 1933, Size: 10.25" H x 8" W (in). ANDREENKO. Was an Uruguayan artist and theorist best known for his contributions to European and Latin American Modernism. Torres-Garcia s works evolved to incorporate elements of both Cubism and Constructivism, all while maintaining an idiosyncratic quality of its own. The architectural, constructive sense of his painting produces a dissociation between drawing and color that remain as two separate entities, he wrote of his work, speaking in the third person, but in tone, color and line, and not in anything representative. These elements now will represent themselves; the whole aesthetic value of the work will reside in its free game. Born on July 28, 1874 in Montevideo, Uruguay, he spent much of adult life living in Spain where he attended the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and befriended Pablo Picasso and Julio Gonzalez. Torres-Garcia s work has been the subject of numerous museum exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2015. His works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, among others. The artist died on August 8, 1949 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
