Item Details
Description
A Chinese Porcelain figure of Budai. "A quite fine and large Chinese Republic-period (1912-49) famille rose and gilt-on-white porcelain image of the Maitreya Buddha, here depicted in avatar form as the Budai Heshang or "Cloth Sack Monk". Considering how well this figure is modeled and decorated, it comes as no surprise to find it signed on the base in a compartmented oval cartouche with eight-character standard-script mark. While a production glaze run obscures some of the writing, we are confident in our evaluation that it reads: "Made at Jing Town, Jiangxi Province, by Mao Ji Sheng" ( Jiangxi, Jing Zhen, Mao Ji Sheng Zao ). Jing Town is the famed porcelain capital of Jingdezhen, and according to established Chinese authority, the Mao Ji Sheng brand undoubtedly was associated with the well known Zhu Maosheng, one of China's best known sources of fine porcelain models during the late Qing and Republic period. " Approximate Dimensions: 10 inches (height) x 10 inches (width) x 5.75 inches (base depth) x 3.4 lbs in weight
Condition
CONDITION: Quite fine and with porcelain body in original condition. The figure shows age appropriate wear to the gilt Long Life (Shou) medallions and otherwise is free of any apparent post-production issues, such as cracks, chips or restoration. All items featured in our Catalogue are pre-owned and may display typical age-worn condition such as chips, nicks, peeling, repainting and or in more extreme cases cracks and or loss.
