Reina Herrera (Moroccan/Venezuelan, 1923-2014), A Grouping of Five Figural Studio Pottery Items
late 20th century, glazed ceramic, including a round moon head wall sculpture in blue harlequin glaze (8 7/8 x 3 1/2 in.) (good condition); a spherical head sculpture in umber tones (7 in.) (good condition); a spherical sculpture with dancing petroglyph style designs (4 in.) (scattered cracks and repairs); tall pottery figure with incised key motifs (16 3/4 in.) All four signed "Reina" to underside. Also included is a small conical shaped pottery head in turquoise and gray glaze, appears unsigned (4 in.) (good condition).
Born in Tétouan, Morocco to a Sephardic Jewish family in 1923, Reina Herrera (also known as Benzecri "Queen" Herrera) was a promoter of ceramic studies in Venezuela together with Miguel Arroyo and Sergio González at the Cristóbal Rojas School of Plastic Arts for more than 25 years, and founded and directed the ceramics workshop of the Design Institute of the Neumann Foundation.
