Pan American Exposition quilt, early 20th century, redwork embroidery on white ground. Some staining and fraying along edges, stains to backing. 82"h, 80"w. Provenance: Estate of Laura Fisher, New York, NY. Catalog note: "Redwork embroidery...enjoyed great popularity at the turn of the twentieth century. Stamped muslin blocks known as penny squares, to be worked in this technique, were sold at the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York; many of them pictured the buildings at the fair." - Fisher and Harding, "Home Sweet Home: The House in American Folk Art", 2001: Rizzoli, New York, page 63.
