Description
Egypt, Coptic Culture, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A beautiful collection of 6 fragments from hand woven cotton and wool textiles, mounted on cardstock or upon modern cotton panels and framed by matboards. The single mounted square board has a tightly woven piece of dark blue and white fibers- the colors now slightly green and brown in areas, but the motifs are discernable: hunters and animals and an oval boarder around a man upon a horse. The 2 textiles in the matte frame have a repeating pattern- one with lions within circles and the other of standing anthropomorphic figures and foliage. The largest matboard has 2 large panels, both depicting blue figures in tunics or togas within an arched border. The final textile along the bottom has a deep brown with abstract white zoomorphs. These textiles were used in burial, the dry desert environment preserving these pieces for over a thousand years! Size of textile fragment w/ horse: 7.5" L x 6.5" W (19 cm x 16.5 cm); board: 10.375" L x 10" W (26.4 cm x 25.4 cm)
