Description
second half 19th century, 146 x 122 cm, East Caucasus
EDER, DORIS, Orientteppiche. Volume 1: Kaukasische Teppiche. Munich 1979, no. 235 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 66, 19 November 2005, lot 114
A Shirvan prayer rug with a diamond lattice design on a golden yellow ground. Composed of serrated dark blue leaves, the diamonds contain plants bearing a large diamond-shaped blossom or small flowering shrubs. The area below the curve of the wide bridge-shaped arch is accentuated by eight blossoms in white and red. These Shirvan rugs are attributed to the Marasali group on account of the characteristic abstract birds placed in their arches. – Slight signs of age and wear, good overall condition, original finishes all around.
