Description
late 19th century, 40 x 136 cm, Central Asia, West Turkestan
HAMBURGISCHES MUSEUM FÜR VÖLKERKUNDE (publ.), Wie Blumen in der Wüste. Die Kultur der turkmenischen Nomadenstämme Zentralasiens. Hamburg 1993, no. 75
Although this Chodor rug is woven in the format of a torba, it probably did not serve as a tent bag, but as a threshold rug for the entrance of a tent. Offset hexagons with serrated outlines in dark blue and red brown, each enclosing four ashik güls, combine into a repeat in the white field. The red border shows stepped polygons. – Slight signs of age and wear, somewhat reduced at the top and bottom, original overcasting along the sides.
