Description
Alberta Kinsey
(American/Louisiana, 1875-1952)
"Fruit Stand, French Market"
oil on canvas board
signed lower left.
Framed.
20" x 25", framed 24" x 29"
Provenance: Neal Auction Company, Oct. 7, 1989, lot 4.
Notes: Raised on her family's farm in Ohio, Alberta Kinsey pursued an artistic career and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and Chicago Art School. When the school where Kinsey was teaching closed due to World War I, the artist moved to the French Quarter. There she found an emerging bohemian art colony of writers, artists and photographers hailed at the time as “the Renaissance of the Vieux Carre" by The Double-Dealer magazine.
Kinsey immersed herself into the artistic community, participated in the Arts and Crafts Club, befriended writer Lyle Saxon and worked to preserve the historic and the then-deteriorating French Quarter.
The painting "Fruit Stand, French Market" illustrates the once daily routine of shopping at one of the city's markets including the Poydras and St. Roch Markets.
