THE FRANKLIN TERRESTRIAL LIBRARY GLOBE, NIMS & KNIGHT, 12", NEW YORK, USA, CIRCA 1882-1892, composed of twelve engraved and hand-colored gores with two polar calottes, a circular reserve "THE FRANKLIN / TERRESTRIAL / GLOBE / 12 INCHES IN DIAMETER   CONTAINING ALL THE / Geographical Divisions / & POLITICAL BOUNDARIES / to the present date / Carefully Compiled from the best Authorities / NIMS & KNIGHT. / TROY N.Y.," over "Rae Smith Engraver / N.Y.," with the oceans North Atlantic Ocean (or Western Ocean), South Atlantic Ocean, North Pacific, South Pacific, Indian Ocean (or Eastern Ocean), etc.; also seas ex: "Arabian Sea," etc.; oceans with analemma, the equatorial graduated in degrees, minutes and hours, ungraduated Greenwich meridian, antimeridian graduated, ecliptic graduated by houses of Zodiac, includes routes of various explorers from Christopher Columbus's first track in 1492, to those with years and some including the ships by de Gama, Balboa, Magellan, Cook, Clerk, Vancouver, Phipps, Furneaux, Perouse, Goré, and Wilkes; includes brief historical text such as Balboa's discovery of the Pacific Ocean (1513) followed by its first navigation by Magellan seven years later, and the death of Capt. Cook (killed by indigenous people for attempting to kidnap Chieftain Kaleiopuu) on the Sandwich Islands now Hawaiian Islands Feb. 14, 1779; a lengthy note on the division of Oceanica (in the Southern Indian Ocean) into three areas titled Malaysia, Australasia, and Polynesia including the various islands contained therein; the continents with tinted nations, empires, territories, possessions, and member states, provinces, etc. with frontiers, borders; includes cities, towns, seats of empires (e.g. Karakorum seat of Mogul Empire) with geographical details, mountains, deserts, rivers, lakes, channels, bays, and known water movements of the time incl. "the Ordinary course of the Gulf Stream;" some man-made details such as the Great Wall of China, or the Barrier of Wood of Corea, as well as the English and French submarine telegraph lines, within a silver painted molded iron meridian circle, and a very worn red edged paper covered horizon ring printed with months, number of days for each month, Zodiac signs and symbols, degrees, and compass directions, verso impressed "B51;" resting on an oak and walnut stand with four curved horizon ring supports with steel ribbons joined at center by a cast iron meridian circle guide centering a lion's mask in relief, above a turned baluster stem raised on tripod legs. Condition
Some marks, small scratches, dings, surface varnish has darkened, old repairs, discolored areas, spots, worn patches, small paper splits, some lifting along edges of gores, some wear and oxidation on metal parts, and surface build up throughout.
