ÉMILE-LOUIS PICAULT (French 1833-1915) PAIR OF EGYPTIAN REVIVAL BRONZE SCULPTURES, "The Scribe Pastophore and High Priest Heirogrammate," CIRCA 1870s, each nicely cast and realistically modeled in a relaxed standing position wearing a striped blackish brown nemes headdress above an attractive face with aloof expression, over a bare torso centering a gilt necklace suspending an amulet pendant and upper arms with gilt bands, one wearing a leopard skin partially draped over shoulder and continuing down back, cinched at waist with gilt belt and his verdis gris patinated kilt (shendyt) tied in front with hieroglyphic incised long panels, while holding a stylus in one hand and a Horus canopic jar in the other, shod in gilt strapped sandals on an integral square form bronze base with incised signature "Picault" and raised on a conforming Vert de Campan marble plinth; the other figure with nemes gathered in a knot on reverse, above a verdis gris patinated kilt simply tied at waist and holding a small stand with a figure of the striding bull deity Apis with horns centering the solar disc, opposite his arm with hand raised in an elegant gesture, standing in matching sandals on squared base with incised signature and raised on same marble plinth. Height: 30" Width: 9" Depth: 8" Note: Émile-Louis Picault was a prominent French sculptor with a large oeuvre of almost five hundred sculptures covering subjects from history, mythology, or allegorical.
Condition
Each with some minor small scratches, surface dust buildup in crevices, and some light wear along edges of marble plinths.
