Description
A PAIR OF GEORGE III CARVED MAHOGANY DINING ROOM PEDESTAL CABINETS, CIRCA 1800, each of tapering square form with a cavetto bordered flat top above a plain frieze and recessed panel sides, centering a hinged door opening to reveal a single shelf interior and raised on a similarly detailed conforming plinth. Height: 41 1/8" Width: 17 7/8" Depth: 17 7/8" Note: George Hepplewhite (English 1727 - 1786) one of the most important furniture designers and makers of 18th century England. The posthumous publication in 1788 by his wife of a large number of his designs under the title "The Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Guide," followed by two more publications in 1789 and 1790, was to firmly establish Hepplewhite's name among other important furniture makers such as Thomas Chippendale and Thomas Sheraton. His designs continued to be of importance long past his demise and even that of his wife, well into the 19th century. His commentary on new furniture in an 18th century context is equally important as it reveals attitudes, purpose, and location. An example is for pedestal cabinets such as the ones offered here where he states that, "pedestals and vases are much used in spacious dining rooms," (being placed either side of a sideboard). "One pedestal serves as a plate-warmer, being provided with racks and a stand for a heater; and is lined with strong tin; the other pedestal is used as a pot cupboard."
