Panic of 1837 Hard Times Token 1837 token from the Panic of 1837, when banks were running out of gold and silver coins after Andrew Jackson's disastrous economic policy. This copper token mocks Jackson's successor, Martin Van Buren. The obverse says "I follow in the steps of my illustrious predecessor" with a running donkey, as Jackson and Van Buren were Democrats.
