Description

Schlubach Residence, architectural plans, New Canaan, Connecticut 1946. (Three stapled sheets, each 17 x 24 inches.)

These plans date to the very beginning of Johnson's Modernist period. 1946 was the year Johnson returned from the military to NYC (MoMA and his architectural practice). These plans predate the Glass House, New Canaan, Connecticut (1949).

Karl Schlubach was a friend of Johnson's. The plans were commissioned by Schlubach to support Johnson's practice and his modernist ideas. The residence shares many of the lines of the Glass House. The house was not intended to be built.

Note: The Philip Johnson archive at the Getty date this project to 1949 but these plans are dated 1946. It is unknown if any other copies of these plans exist, or if these plans represent an earlier rendering than those in the Johnson archive.

Provenance: Karl W. Schlubach and thereafter by descent to the consignor.

Condition
