Description
A white marble bust of Cincinnati businessman Job M. Nash, signed and dated "Preston Powers / sculp 1884". The work of Preston Powers continued the tradition of his father, American sculptor Hiram Powers (1805-1873). After leaving his father's Italian studio, Powers operated in Boston, modeling the portraits of prominent individuals. He taught in both Cincinnati and Denver, and exhibited in the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 before returning to Florence, where he spent his remaining years. Nash was active in the tobacco and liquor trade, and this bust was executed by Powers in 1884 in Florence. Nash gifted the bust to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1892.
