An impressive American edition of Holy Scripture in the Swedish language, known as "Den Heliga Skrift," edited by H. M. Melin and containing the Old and New Testaments, along with the Apocrypha. The huge book is illustrated with engravings after drawings by Gustave Dore and other prominent artists that were originally made for a French Bible published in 1843. Bound in brown leather, the cover, back, and spine all display gilt and black designs of Biblical scenes, while a pair of decorative brass buckles strap across the fore-edge. A lustrous gilding additionally adorns the page edges. The majority of engravings are in black and white, though a few throughout boast red, green, and blue pigments, as well as gilt details. Size: 11" L x 4.5" W x 12.7" H (27.9 cm x 11.4 cm x 32.3 cm)

Intended as a family Bible to be passed down through generations, the back of the codex features several frame boards meant for photos of family members with 1 frame still containing a photograph of a mustached gentleman.

Tearing with some fraying and light loss to peripheries of leather cover. Brass buckles are loose and do not latch. Tearing to top of joint between front cover and spine near head. Minor tear to 1 back frame board. Folding to corners of some pages and light wrinkling to a few. Liberal remains of gilt edge. Otherwise, very good with excellent preservation of engravings and text throughout.
