Item Details
Description
Excellent, early production, 100% original, 100% complete, mechanically perfect, and in original flintlock ignition. This 1756 pattern remained in use from the French & Indian Wars up through the War of 1812 and Waterloo. This one is a good 1777 - early 1780s example with the 12 inch barrel, undated store keepers stock marking ( crown over GR ), crossed scepters stamped on the top of the barrel as opposed to the left breech. In addition the lock markings are engraved and not stamped, again an earlier feature. The 2 visible screws behind the hammer show production of 1777 and later. The other features mentioned above pre date 1790. By the 1790s the barrels were shortened to 9 inches, with many old patterns cut down and all new production made with 9 inchers. This is not one of the more common East India Company guns, but rather a true King George Tower flintlock pistol. .56 caliber, 12" round barrel with a very good plus bore showing some spots of light oxidation. The barrel, rounded lock and belt hook of this pistol are crisp clean steel with sharp markings-. The lock is clearly engraved -(Crown) / GR / Broad Arrow / and TOWER. Crisp proofs include two scepter ciphers on the top of the breech, a letter O, and a tiny crown on the left side of the breech. There are clear crown inspection marks at the tang and belt hook. There is a script GR under a crown in the wrist behind the lock being the store keepers mark undated as per early production, and an asterisk in the stock behind the belt hook screw on the left stock. The brass surfaces have been lightly cleaned some time ago and are mostly bright showing some scattered tiny dings and handling marks. The walnut stock remains in very good plus condition with sharp edges and markings. A very attractive sea service pistol uncut from its original length.
As a comical aside. When I found this gun at a show on a table covered with grossly overpriced modern guns I asked the price and was told ....... -four and a half- ........ I assumed the seller meant $4,500.00. The seller asked what I thought of the price and I answered -Its pretty aggressive-.......... He said - Ill take $400-

As with all my items No Reserve.
