Gilbert Maggioni (American, 1921-2001), Two Low Country Scenes
watercolor and graphite on paper, unsigned, the first depicting a woman hanging the wash, the second depicting two women watching the weather roll in, framed under glass.
Frame dimensions 20 1/4 x 25 1/2 in. and 23 3/4 x 18 3/4 in.
Gilbert Maggioni was the son of an Italian immigrant. In 1870, his father, Luigi Paoli Maggioni, opened an oyster factory on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina in 1883. Maggioni would work for his father, but was an artist as well. In addition to painting, he was a well known decoy carver.
