Description
An oil on canvas applied to board depicting St. Caralampio the Martyr, probably 17th/18th century and mounted within a hand made tin diorama from the 19th century - Spanish colonial. It is signed along the base "S. Caralampio / V / Martyr". As depicted in the painting, the saint is being beheaded and he looks towards heaven and says (inscription on canvas) "te pino lo pas que no haiga geste ni hambre" which translates to "I love you so much that there is no gesture or hunger". The painting itself measures 8 3/4" x 11 1/2" and the frame measures 20" x 14 1/4". Condition: Canvas applied to newer board, some losses bottom right corner, small scattered tack holes and tiny slits around the perimeter of painting (see photo), otherwise good condition. San Caralampio (St. Caralampos or St. Charalamio) was an early Christian saint and martyr from the third century AD. The following credit Wikipedia: "Charalambos was Bishop of Magnesia also known as the Assyrian Saint Mar Zayya[2] and spread the Gospel in that region for many years. However, when news of his preaching reached the authorities of the area, the proconsul Lucian and military commander Lucius, the saint was arrested and brought to trial, where he confessed his faith in Christ and refused to offer sacrifice to idols. Despite his advanced age (believed to be 113 years old), he was tortured mercilessly. They lacerated his body with iron hooks, and scraped all the skin from his body. The saint had only one thing to say to his tormentors: "Thank you, my brethren, for scraping off the old body and renewing my soul for new and eternal life.". According to the saint's hagiography, upon witnessing Charalambos' endurance of these tortures, two soldiers, Porphyrius and Baptus, openly confessed their faith in Christ, for which they were immediately beheaded with a sword. Three women who were watching the sufferings of Charalambos also began to glorify Christ, and were quickly martyred as well.". Provenance: From the Doris and Jerry Soldner collection, Lake Carmel NY (formally of Kingston NY).
