An assembled set of 6 Chippendale style dining chairs including: Two matching transitional chairs with carved ears and vase-form splats, square legs with one chamfered edge, and replaced rush seat (rope rush has been added) - both in very good condition, late 18th century; and a matching set of 4 with serpentine crest, pierced splat, square legs with 1 edge chamfered, and having newer upholstered seats - finish slightly worn, several stretchers with animal chew marks otherwise good stable condition - circa late 19th century. Provenance: This item was handed down to consignor's wife from either the Stotesbury family of Philadelphia - builder and part owner of JP Morgan in the 19th/20th century, or the Minturn families of NY - the consignor's wife's great uncle was Col. Robert Shaw (the film "Glory") and her great grandmother was Susanna Shaw Minturn (1839 - 1926) who gifted the land to NY that became part of Central Park. The Minturn family also owned the clipper ship "The Flying Cloud" and were leading merchants in NY City in the 19th/20th centuries.
