Item Details
Description
North America, United States, Civil War era, ca. 1861 to 1865 CE. A curved powderhorn or powder flask shaped from a carved bull horn bearing smooth surfaces. Both the bottom and top ends are fitted with iron caps, with a narrow spout emanating from atop the top cap. A back plate and several iron screws hold the powder-dispensing spout in place, and a suspension loop and belt bar are attached to one side. American soldiers during the civil war would store their black powder inside powderhorns like this example to keep it dry and away from any sparks which could ignite their entire cache. Size: 8.625" L x 3.8" W (21.9 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: private Brevard, North Carolina, USA collection
